EDIT August 4, 2025: Dappervolk Wiki has officially moved to Miraheze as a direct result of Fandom's AI internationalization pilot. This wiki will no longer be kept up-to-date by current administrators (JaneBuzJane and Dulcynea) and all content should be considered outdated as of August 4, 2025. Dappervolk site staff and current administrators will only edit on https://dappervolk.miraheze.org going forward. Per Fandom's aggressive forking policy, this is the only notice that will be provided of this change.
Hi wiki readers!
There was recently a discussion on the Dappervolk Discord regarding the wiki's hosting on Fandom.com I was initially hesitant about any commitment to "fork" the wiki during that conversation (due to - among other things - being a volunteer/not the wiki's original founder and Fandom's incredibly hostile forking policy).
Over the past week, however, Fandom recently unveiled an "experimental pilot" to start translating wikis into German using LLMs. (Dappervolk Wiki is currently NOT a part of this pilot.) This pilot is being advertised with the intent to "expand Fandom's international audience" and "support international editors," even though they had a human support team for international editors that was recently cut. This (along with the widely scorned Quick Answers feature) doesn't instill any faith in me that this generative AI pilot will be the last move that they try and make regarding AI and wikis.
DV has writers on staff, and the wiki hosts transcripts - if this pilot were to be successful and the feature fully implemented with no ability to opt-out. The writers would have little control over how their words would be translated, Given that some players have also recently shared worryingly bad ads they've been receiving from Fandom, I am increasingly uncomfortable with continuing to host the wiki on Fandom.com.
Sooooooo I want to ask the community and staff a few things
👉 Am I overreacting and this is nothing? Or do you also see it as a "sign of things to come," and wish to jump ship? (Fork)
In case this influences your decision: note that if we decide to fork, the wiki cannot be "closed" - Fandom will keep the wiki up, and we are not allowed to link out to the new one in any way (on the main page, through a site announcement popup, etc.) Random people could continue to make changes and edit the Fandom.com wiki even if our new official one is somewhere else, and I would not be able to revert those edits because Fandom appoints new admins once the fork is complete. We cannot delete or vandalize pages before forking. Unless people go to the Discussions tab and see a post about forking, the Fandom.com wiki would continue to exist and potentially could grow outdated over time, leading to incorrect information and player dissatisfaction.
👉 If we fork, is there a preference for wiki hosts? If so, do I have the blessing of Staff to undergo a fork on my own (and not relying upon Official Staff™ to set up the wiki at the new location)?
Note that this discussion does not commit the admins to forking or other drastic actions - it is meant for community discussion and response and should not be taken as implicit approval of any other potential wiki hosts outside of Fandom.com.
