Pet Affection measures a player's personal relationship with a pet. It can be raised through daily interactions on the pet's page as well as annually on their birthday. The amount of affection gained per action is decided by the pet's current mood and their nature relative to the gifted item.
If a pet is traded or otherwise removed from a player's menagerie, their affection will reset back to 0.

Affection Levels
All pets start out at 0 affection, whether hatched or bought from someone else. The affection cap depends on the pet's rarity.
- Quaint Pets: 500
- Fantastical Pets: 1,000
- Mythical Pets: 1,000
- Legendary Pets: 2,000
Max Affection
Once a pet's affection has been raised to the maximum level, the Affection tracker hearts receive a rainbow overlay and the label "Maxed!" Affection can be maxed multiple times for the same pet, gradually turning the rainbow into a paler shade.
A pet's affection can only be maxed out 5 times, after which time milestone rewards will not be awarded. Affection rewards are cumulative on a single pet, meaning a Fantastical pet will receive the same rewards from the 200-500 affection milestones as a Quaint pet; similarly, a Legendary pet will receive all the rewards that Quaint and Fantastical pets receive.
Additionally, gaining maximum affection with multiple pets counts towards a special achievement.
Rewards
Special rewards are unlocked at certain milestones which are specific to the pet's rarity. Once maximum affection has been reached, the pet will be able to evolve. An evolved pet takes on a different color scheme and receives a unique sparkling animation. The color can be changed at any time but the sparkle will remain.
The following rewards are for the first time a player maxes out the affection of a given pet. Some rewards may be different if there is a hidden deity item in the pool for that given month.

Affection Gain
There are always four icons under an owned pet, which increases to five on their birthday. These icons represent actions that can be completed in order to gain affection from that specific pet. Once an action is completed, the icon will be grayed out and non-clickable until the following day, upon which it resets and can be completed again.
For a pet that the player doesn't own, the only available option will be "Pet." Clicking it will boost the pet's mood by one stage for the day.
Tip: If attempting to raise pet affection quickly and efficiently, complete the Questing, Petting, and Chatting interactions before the Gifting interaction, as a happier pet will result in a larger affection gain from the gift.
Questing
The first icon - which takes the form of a roll of parchment - will generate a quest from the pet. Available quests are feeding them a food item, equipping them with a totem, or fetching one of a set of three items. (They will only ask for hatching items, food items, and Mixer Potions.)
Petting
The second icon, which takes the form of an open hand, is petting the pet. This will raise the pet's mood.
Chatting
The third icon, which takes the form of a speech bubble, is chatting with the pet. This will raise the pet's mood.
Gifting
The fourth icon - which takes the form of a wrapped gift - will present the player with a choice of three items to give the pet. Depending on the pet's mood and nature, it is not guaranteed that they will enjoy it. The gifts a pet will ask for are common and rare chance machine prizes, NPC clothing items, common totems, pet food, and hatching items.
Pets will enjoy items that have stats which correspond to their nature (i.e., a pet with a Charming nature will appreciate items from Glume, a Charming NPC, but hate items from Bearnard, a Tenacious NPC). If unsure about the nature of an item, investigate its source, which is usually an NPC.
Pet Birthday Gift
Every pet species has a specific in-game item that they treasure most above all else. Giving a pet the right item on their birthday will result in 30 affection gained. For a list of favorite gifts, see Pet Birthdays. Pets will react to other gifts depending upon their nature (much like regular gifts), and will award 5-15 affection for non-favorite birthday items.
Pet Mood Factor
A deciding factor in how much affection can be gained from a pet is their current mood. There are six types of pet moods: Mad, Neutral, Cheeky, Content, Happy and Joyful. Pets will get their mood randomly assigned each day.
Moods are represented in the moving emoticons beneath the pet's picture. A positive mood yields higher affection gain while a neutral or angry mood yields lower or none at all. However, with the right gift corresponding to their nature they will always gain affection.
A pet's mood can be improved by feeding them to raise their mood bar or by petting them. For pets under 300 affection, the "Joyful" mood is not unlocked, and your pet's Happy mood will simply stay at 10/10 if you try to increase it.
Pet Nature Factor
It is important to take into account a pet's nature when offering them gifts. Just like the four Dappervolk classes, pets have an affinity and a weakness when it comes to stats. Giving a pet an item that corresponds with their nature will generally yield high affection, while giving them an item that opposes their personality will yield little to no affection.[1]
When is comes to what gift a pet will like, it is important to look at the NPC that corresponds to the item. If a pet asks for a Cabbage, the item comes from Calbet, who is a Charming NPC. A collapsible guide on NPC stats can be found below, but can also be discovered through browsing their Chance Machines.
While the nature of some items can be found by viewing the tooltip to see what stats they give when equipped, this isn't always foolproof; for instance, a Plump Turnip comes from Bearnard - an Honourable NPC - but awards Charm when equipped. A Charming pet will not like a Plump Turnip, but an Honourable pet will.
- Tenacious Nature: Likes Tenacity , dislikes Charm .
- Honourable Nature: Likes Honour , dislikes Comprehension .
- Charming Nature: Likes Charm , dislikes Tenacity .
- Comprehensive Nature: Likes Comprehension , dislikes Honour .
