Dappervolk Wiki

Astra is an astronomer residing in Aviar Cove. He observes the stars and analyzes their movement, performing star divination as his livelihood.

Background

Astra learned to read at one year old and became an astronomer at 11 after 10 years of study. The stars matters more to Astra than anything and he claims to be able to hear their voices. He holds great belief in the gods tied to them, and his patron deity is Ravan (although he has met Aeolin once).

Personality

Hospitality is of no concern to him, as he greatly dislikes being bothered and rarely leaves his home. He will quickly open up to those who share his interests, however, and he is the chief and sole member of the Aviar Cove Astronomical Association. He fears falling into obscurity and hopes that future generations will not find his work trivial.

He frequently invokes the deities, as can be observed during Pellumi's Winter Festivities. He mentions the following phrases:

  • "The swiftness of Thalies"
  • "The memory of Signi"
  • "Ivita's curse"
  • "Soll's grace"
  • "Kelbi's shell"
  • "Aeolin's great ship"
  • "Ravan's great library"
  • "What in Soll's name"
  • "Turara's strength"
  • "Ingi's flame"
  • "Pann's bountiful harvest"
  • "Signi's great snowstorm"
  • "Vaer's great sea"

He also has several "deity-related soothing mantras." This character trait is likely indicative of both his great knowledge and his generally crotchety demeanor.

Relationships

Astra's mother was a respected astronomer. She was the only family he had, other than some distant relatives they rarely communicated with. During Pellumi's Winter Festivities, she's described by Astra as having a good sense of humor and often getting involved in endless debates with an associate. Both of them were introverted and preferred to spend time at home.

Astra's personality and hobbies frequently clash with Lief. He frequently tries to get rid of her inventions that hinder his ability to see the stars.

Chance Machine

Some of the items that Astra wears can be found in his Chance Machine, "Astra's Observatory," along with an assortment of other items.

Affection Milestones

Astra will send you letters after reaching certain Affection milestones.

World-hopper,

It is strange to write letters to someone I see in person so often. Normally this would be a task reserved for my associates who do not persistently show up at my tower and insist on helping me with my errands. But given your seeming interest in my life work, I supposed I owed you some thanks. Such things are much more easily conveyed through written word.

That is to say, thank you. I believe we have both benefited much from our continued association. Me from your apparent wellspring of free time, and you from my unparalleled knowledge of the stars. You are probably benefiting slightly more than me, but that is acceptable.

Regards, Astra

World-hopper,

As Ivita would have it, the skies are clear tonight and I require your presence. I shall impart my purpose upon you in person if you see fit to visit my observatory at great haste. May the swift winds of Aeolin bless your travels.

Salutations, Astra

800 Affection

World-hopper,

Were you watching the sky last night? It was a transition night, which is clearly discernible even from the non ideal viewing spot of my home. As you know, this signals a period of refreshment and newness in all things, so do not forget to wear clean clothes and replace the food and water of the pets in your care.

I normally don’t make special inquiries about the auspicious behaviors of others, but I make an exception in your case. As a newcomer to this land, you may forget these basic customs. Luckily, you have a well read and generous associate in me.

Regards, Astra

World-hopper,

I find myself in a pensive mood today. I have written my divinations, chipped away at my research, and prepared my tools for tonight's stargazing, and yet I still feel a sense of despondence. That was strange enough, but even stranger is that I sat down and began composing a letter to you.

Previously, quiet reflection on the stars was the one thing that could lift my spirits, but lately I find myself anticipating your visits and conversation with nearly the same excitement. Of course, nothing holds a fonder place in my heart than astronomy, but...

I look forward to speaking with you again. Even writing this letter has lightened my spirits somewhat. If you find yourself in a similar situation in the future, you are more than welcome to write a letter to me.

Sincerely, Astra

Dear world-hopper,

In what can only be a sign from the heavens, I found the enclosed gemstone within my divination chambers late last night. Perhaps it suggests a blessing from Turara, although its color could also suggest a relationship with Thalies or Ingi... Very mysterious indeed. I will have to meditate on its origins further.

That said, I am sending it to you for safe keeping. I do not mean to imply that my tower is not safe, but rather that I would prefer the gemstone’s blessing to protect your on your travels. The road can be a perilous place, but you now walk with the favour of the stars above. I can also rest assured that you will safely return to visit me again.

The skies should be clear tonight. I trust that you will be looking up.

Sincerely, Astra

Player Birthday (300 Affection)

World-hopper,

I’m writing this letter to send you my greetings on your day of birth. Your guardian deity is surely looking down from the heavens to offer you their protective care. I trust that you will spend most of the day in solemn meditation of their divine providence and the wonders of the cosmos.

Once you have finished that, please unwrap the gifts I have enclosed. Although no gift can equal the blessings of the stars, perhaps you can find some use for them. They were just sitting around my tower, doing no good to anyone, so now they are yours.

Again, happy birthday.

Regards, Astra

Hello world-hopper,

Well well, may I ask why you insist on coming around to my tower so frequently lately? I understand that your limited knowledge and bumbling demeanor is no fault of your own, but your actions are causing me quite some consternation. My day to day life is being disrupted like the stars being hidden by a dark cloud. The dark cloud being you. Please have some consideration for an old harpy's well being and try to stay away once in awhile.

World-hopper,

Greetings, odious child. My days are night, and my nights grow ever darker, the world is a vortex of woe. I do not wish to see you any longer, may Ombra spread her shadows to take you from my sight. It is clear that you have no good will for me, I demand that you cease this incessant heckling at once. Is it not better to dedicate yourself to more beneficial ends?

Astra

World-hopper,

Signi weeps over me, and I drown in misery. Will it ever end? I have watched the night sky and it gives me no answers as to how long the plague of your presence will last. It cannot be that you are unending, so it must be that you are simply too wretched. Your presence darts between the stars where no light shines. But I remember clearly which star you were born under, and after consulting my almanac, I can only offer you this warning: without a shift in paradigm, your future shall be bleak.

Chit Chat

Chit-chatting with an NPC will give you a maximum of +1 Affection. per day. They will repeat the same sentences over and over, but it’s a nice way of getting to know a bit more about Dappervolk and its inhabitants.

Low Affection

  • "What is your business here? I have my research to attend to."
  • "Do not linger here. Your presence dulls the energy of the stars..."
  • "Zzz... Hrm? Sleeping? Nonsense, I was simply meditating."
  • "Hmph. You think yourself so clever, but you know nothing of the heavens."

High Affection

  • "Ah, world-hopper. Have you come to aid in my research?"
  • "I am unaccustomed to guests, but I've heard it's appropriate to offer a warmed beverage. Wait here."

After Pellumi's Winter Festivities

  • "Pellumi hasn't visited yet, I do hope he's not getting up to any mischief."
  • "I wonder what other revelations await me, a small spark of new hunger for knowledge has alighted in me in recent days."
  • "Hello world-hopper, have you been on any travels lately? I'm thinking about embarking on another research trip. Perhaps somewhere warm."
  • "May Soll's light shine favourably upon you and bestow equilibrium of mind."

Trivia

  • Astra was born in February, under the guardian deity of knowledge Ravan.
