Lief is an inventor living in Aviar Cove who runs a shop called Portlight Illuminations together with her friend and business partner Pellier. She is described as a short bird-like girl.
Background
Lief comes from a long line of glass-blowers, famous for their traditional glass artwork. Lief's uncle in particular is considered one of the best in history and even has his own glassblowing school outside of town. She too was expected to take up the trade but instead used the skill to pave her own path, creating the lightbulb's design. Her conservative family was not happy with it. Some of them came around, while some remain stubborn of the belief that Lief is wasting her talent. Her uncle is divided on the matter, liking the product but unsure about if it will reach any success. It is part of her immense motivation to make the lightbulb business succeed, to prove to her family that she made the right decision.
Relationships
Lief runs her business together with Pellier. They do experiments together and other than business partners, they have known each other since childhood. Lief names him as her number one critic and best friend and don't know what she'd do without him.
She clashes with Carneau's beliefs and finds it hard to talk to him, something she'd rather avoid. It is mentioned that she used to set up seagull traps for him 10 years.

Dear World-hopper, I went through a couple drafts of this letter. I had Pellier read over it, too. Usually it's easy for me to say things, but that's because I'm careless about it. Half the time I just blurt out whatever pops into my head. I'm not used to being serious about my emotions, but I want to try. World-hopper, you're really important to me! Reading this you might go, "Well, obviously I am, I'm always at your house doing stuff for you," but that's not the only reason. I'd still care about you even if you developed a sudden allergy to helping and only came over to make jokes and eat all our food. However, just as I sat down to write a letter of grievance, an idea came to me. It needs a bit of testing and some final adjustments to remove the lingering explosions, but just you wait. The next time you try to come by and disrupt my work, you’ll find yourself facing an absolutely brilliantly deterrent! You see, I have set up some lights in front of my doorway. These are from my ultra secret lightbulb series, which are one hundred times brighter than the standard lightbulb—enough to cast light out through a gloomy night! per day. They will repeat the same sentences over and over, but it’s a nice way of getting to know a bit more about Dappervolk and its inhabitants.
